planting our first garden

Gardening season has arrived in the ABQ. A few weeks ago Dale ordered us some raised beds from Sam's Club and on Saturday we put them together. It only took us about 10 minutes, if that, to build the beds and then the real fun began.

Next we headed to The Home Depot to get some dirt! This is my first time planting my own garden and I had no idea how much dirt it really takes. 10 bags of Miracle-Gro garden soil later we were prepared to get our beds ready for plants.

On our second trip to Home Depot it was time to pick out our vegetable plants. We ended up getting four varieties of tomatoes and peppers, acorn and butternut squash, and a few tomatillos. We also picked up two strawberry plants that we'll plant separately in their own pot.

I've been really excited about planting herbs too, so we got a cilantro, sweet mint, and parsley to add to the basil I got from Trader Joe's earlier this week. I scored three large pots from Walmart for only $5 each a few weeks ago that we're going to use for the herbs, strawberries, and eventually some flowers for the front yard.

Isn't my fiance cute? Among his many talents, gardening is definitely one of them.

This is one of our two raised beds. We planted marigolds with our plants to help keep the bugs away.

This is my, "Look mom, I'm gardening and I actually like it!" face.

After two trips to The Home Depot, a few hundred bucks, and a couple hours of work, we have a our first garden! I'm so excited to watch our vegetables grow and use them to create delicious dishes and drinks.

I never thought gardening would be something I would actually want to do. My mom is an avid gardener and I grew up helping her, but I honestly never thought it was fun. Oh how things change when you grow up. Now that I have a house of my own and a loving man by my side, gardening is actually pretty darn fun.
